Unity Week 11/15/19

Mindful Yoga

9 – 9:45 am | Chinook 22  (Provided by Joanne Greene)

This adaptive yoga class will give everyone the space to relax and open up in a way that soothes muscles and releases minds. With its slower pace, this class will keep everyone supported and safe while we connect with our breath and body. The event is free for all students, faculty, and staff who are interested in participating in this Unity Week event. This class is sponsored by University Recreation, the Access Center, and WSU ROAR.

UndocuAlly Training

10 am – 12 pm | CUB 206 (Provided by: Marcela Pattinson and Matthew Jeffries)

Develop an understanding of undocumented students’ experiences. The training introduces participants to resources and best practices that will assist them in becoming an ally for undocumented students.

Destress with MSS

1 – 3 pm | MSS Student Centers  (Sponsors: Multicultural Student Services (MSS))

Ceramics and Glass Painting (AAPI), Mindfulness Programming and Origami (AEC), Gingerbread house making and other arts and crafts (AASC), Adult coloring books and other arts and crafts (SMART Start), and holiday arts (CLSC). 

CCE Service Project: Palouse Conservation District

Meet at CUB L 38 | 1:15 – 4:30 pm | Transportation provided

Students will assist the Palouse Conservation District in their environmental restoration work, including weeding, tree planting, watering, and area cleanups. Sign up for Palouse Conservation Distrct here.

CCE Service Project: Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute (PCEI) Meet at CUB L 38 | 8:20 – 11:45 am | Transportation provided

Students will assist PCEI staff with beautifying the 26.2-acre PCEI Nature Center– a public, open space facility. Tasks may include wood chipping pathways, breaking new trail, managing invasive plant species, setting up for an event and more. Sign up for PCEI here.

Students with Disabilities Ally Training 1:30 – 3:00 pm | Available via Zoom Only  (Provided by: Rochelle Dach)

Join us in a collaborative discussion on being an ally for students with disabilities. We’ll discuss a bit of history, myths and stereotypes, and what it looks like to create a truly inclusive environment when compared with only accommodating someone’s disability.

United We Stand Tabling with ATVP 11 am – 1 pm | CUB 1st Floor  (Provided by: Alternatives to Violence on the Palouse (ATVP))
Understanding the First Amendment at WSU 4 – 6 pm | Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center and via Zoom

Join us as we discuss protected speech in the context of higher education, as presented by WSU Assistant Attorney General, Nathan Deen. Followed by facilitated discussions to clarify policy and identify tools through which we can all engage in a more affirmative, civil, and meaningful way.

Unity Week 11/12/19

LGBTQ+ Ally Training 10 am – 12 pm |  CUE 512 and via Zoom (Provided by: GIESORC)

This interactive training is designed to give the participant an introduction to issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. The training is interspersed with short video clips to illustrate specific concepts and also includes several activities that provide the participants with opportunities to work individually and in small groups to discuss new concepts and vocabulary. One activity is about conceptualizing the influences of identity, one activity focuses on vocabulary, one provides an opportunity for role playing, and another activity involves working in small groups to process scenarios.

Inclusive Zumba 10 am | Chinook 20 (Provided by Jess Whitt)

Let’s lose ourselves in the music and find ourselves having fun while staying fit at this original dance-fitness party from Colombia! We feature various Latin rhythms and other dance styles set to high-energy international beats. Our energy levels will soar while we increase cardiovascular endurance in an effective and exhilarating workout! Free for all students, faculty, and staff.

Know Your Rights 3:30 – 5:30 pm | Education Addition 202 (Provided by Marcela Pattinson)
Powwow Sweat 4 – 5 pm | Chinook 20 (Provided by Joelle Edwards & Jess Whitt with University Recreation) Developed by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, it is a fitness program with a series workout videos that uses traditional powwow dances as a way to exercise. It’s a little like Zumba but with a Native twist.
